About Joan

Joan Zoroa Olivella is a highly skilled violin maker and bow stringed instrument restorer with a passion deeply rooted in the art of woodworking. Born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Joan embarked on his musical journey at the Superior Music Conservatory Liceu, where his interest in the intricate world of woodwork grew during his fine arts studies at the University of Barcelona.

In 2007, Joan's pursuit of excellence led him to Italy, where he graduated in 2011 from the renowned International Violin Making School in Cremona, the hometown of the legendary Antonio Stradivari. Immersed in the rich tradition of Cremonese craftsmanship, Joan honed his expertise in violin making and the restoration of bow instruments while working in various prestigious workshops.

Taking his skills to England in 2012, Joan contributed his talents to the vibrant musical scene, working in a variety of luthier workshops in London and Staffordshire. In these diverse environments, he further perfected his art, specialising in the restoration and comprehensive knowledge of violins, violas, and cellos.

Joan is dedicated to the meticulous restoration of instruments by notable makers such as Gand&Bernadel, Voller Brothers, Luigi Fabris, Paolo de Barbieri, and others. He also delves into the study of revered masters like Stradivarius, Nicolo’ Amati, Giovanni Grancino, and Steiner.

With a wealth of experience gained through years of study and instrument restoration, Joan has played a crucial role in helping numerous musicians achieve their artistic aspirations. While his specialization lies in crafting new instruments, he also takes on repairs, fine restoration projects, bow rehairing, and tonal adjustments for violins, cellos, and violas.

Drawing inspiration from both Cremonese and Spanish traditions, Joan's work reflects a harmonious blend of influences. In December 2022, he took a significant step in his journey, relocating to the historic city of Dunfermline in Fife, Scotland. Establishing his own workshop, Joan is committed to continuing his legacy of craftsmanship and contributing to the musical tapestry of Edinburgh and beyond.
